I started the second Basics post explaining my thinking behind it, but then I realized that it would apply to all the posts in the Basics category and a central place to state the ideas would be better for everyone’s understanding so here are the reasons, or manifesto for the Basics posts.
In this group of posts I’m going to try to cover the materials, and handling of those materials, in a sort of how to, or tutorial fashion. I have no illusions that these will be the first how to articles on using art materials since I’ve read enough to clog anyone’s brain, but I hope that the way I say something will be the key to at least one person’s learning or understanding.
While speaking to people I’ve often been surprised by questions that I assumed others knew. On the other hand, I’ve struggled many times to find some tidbit of information that other authors have also assumed that everyone knows. Because of that I’m going to try to be thorough and not leave out information that I might think is common knowledge. That means that some of this might be redundant to some people, so if you are beyond something, please feel free to skip ahead.
And if there is something I’ve missed, or something that I said that is confusing, don’t hesitate to ask me to clarify it.
Also, in case I haven’t mentioned it, comments are a very good place to ask those questions.
